The next SPIN:Glasgow event will show you another part of the Glasgow art scene, an artist-led activity which complements the organisations and projects we’ve seen already which are publicly funded (Glasgow Sculpture Studios, Tramway, CCA), or the commercial galleries (Mary Mary).

Glasgow Project Room is a gallery space within a group of artists’ studios called Glasgow Independent Studios – so called because they receive no public funding but are run from studio rents. Each artist tenant contributes an extra amount towards having the gallery space, and the exhibiting artist has to pay for all of the costs of putting an exhibition together. For this reason, the shows are often invigilated by the artist themselves and therefore do not have a long run in the space.

David Stamp graduated from Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art in Dundee, but is now based in Glasgow. David will talk to us about his new work, Reach, a video work which features him as his ongoing alter-ego, The Wise Man, on a paint-ball escapade with a rabbit . . .

David’s work explores ideas of knowledge, and of gaining knowledge, versus instinct and innocence. He recently published a book entitled 6 Day Wise Man where he, as ‘the wise man’ endeavoured to survive in the wilderness for 6 days with only tips previously gleaned from books and his own wit to guide him.

SPIN:Glasgow members should meet outside the 13th Note pub on King Street at 6.20pm. Glasgow Independent Studios is just round the corner on Osborne Street.
