Uniting two artists in a joint show and finding common ground between them can be simple if both are recent Scottish graduates. Gemma and Mark completed their degrees in 2005, the former at Duncan of Jordanstone in Dundee, and the latter at Edinburgh College of Art.
At first glance, other than their academic achievements, there is little to connect both practitioners, but we will look a little deeper into the realms of these young minds at our next Spin event on Thursday 27 July.
Think of Galileo’s Acceleration Hypothesis, supremely executed by Rosencrantz (or was it Guildenstern) who proves an obvious puzzle in life, demonstrating the different rates at which objects fall – an iron ball plummets to the floor while the feather floats to the ground.
We can explore this idea, and twist its irony, with paper aeroplanes made from lead and a giant dense black weather balloon which is filled with air, as well as with a series of beautifully executed drawings, paintings and works in resin.
Spin members will also have the opportunity to meet the Director of the gallery, Amber Roome, who will provide us with further insights into these two inspiring individuals.
